A Journey Across Europe: How the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Shaped My Academic Path in Rural Development

Pranesh Lavania, a young scholar from Uttarakhand, India, has been living the academic dream. Thanks to the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, he is pursuing a master's degree in rural development across various prestigious European universities. His journey began at Ghent University in Belgium and has taken him to Slovakia, France, and even a brief stint in Poland.

The Erasmus Mundus Experience

The Erasmus Mundus program offers students a joint degree from six universities, including Ghent University, Belgium; L’Institut Agro, France; Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany; University of Cordoba, Spain; University of Pisa, Italy, and Slovak University of Agriculture, Nitra. Students have the flexibility to choose a minimum of three and a maximum of six universities for their studies. Pranesh is currently in the last phase of his master's at L’Institut Agro Rennes-Angers in France.

The Application Process

Pranesh applied for the program and the scholarship simultaneously. The application required transcripts, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, a CV, and a 2000-word research paper. Out of 50 selected candidates, the top 15 receive the scholarship, and Pranesh was among them.

Specialization and Learning

Pranesh's focus is on society within rural development. He is studying various aspects like trade, supply, resources, land ownership, gender, and power. The program has nearly 17 types of specializations in rural development, offering a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Life in Europe

Living in Europe has been an enriching experience for Pranesh. He has traveled to several countries under the Schengen visa and has enjoyed the diverse cultures and lifestyles. From open markets and carnivals to sports and literary clubs, European cities offer a plethora of activities for students.

Work-Life Balance

Europe has taught Pranesh the importance of work-life balance. Unlike in India, where work often overshadows other aspects of life, Europeans maintain a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives.

Future Plans

Pranesh plans to return to India and contribute to the academic field. His journey has been challenging but rewarding, and he advises future students to be well-prepared, learn the local language, and adapt to the culture for a fulfilling experience.
