The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune offers a unique pathway for those aspiring to become doctors in the Indian Army. To become a doctor in the Indian Army, one has to complete an MBBS course from AFMC Pune. The course duration is four and a half years, followed by a one-year internship. Admission to the undergraduate medical course at AFMC is based on the NEET exam and a Psychological Assessment Test (PAT). Candidates must score at least 50 percentile in the NEET exam to be eligible for admission. The maximum age limit for those taking admission after completing a BSc is 24 years. Additionally, applicants must be unmarried and should be between 17 to 24 years of age. A minimum of 60% marks in subjects like English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in intermediate education is also required. AFMC offers a total of 145 seats for the MBBS course, out of which 115 are for males and 30 for females. Five seats are reserved for foreign students, and 10 are reserved for SC and ST candidates. After completing the MBBS course from AFMC, students are required to serve as commissioned officers in the armed forces. A bond of Rs 28 lakh is signed at the time of admission, which has to be paid if one decides to leave the course or the army. The highest salary for a doctor in the army can go up to Rs 16 lakh per annum.
