Defying the Odds: How a Hearing-Impaired Woman Aced the UPSC Exam on Her First Try

Saumya Sharma's story is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite losing her hearing ability at the age of 16, she achieved an incredible feat by passing the UPSC examination on her very first attempt. What's even more remarkable is that she did it with just four months of self-preparation, all while juggling her studies at the prestigious National Law School.

The Journey to Success

Saumya had always been an excellent student. When she decided to take on the UPSC exam in 2017, she had only four months to prepare. Unfazed by the tight schedule, she demonstrated unwavering determination and focus. During the mains exam, she battled high fever and extreme physical discomfort but still managed to complete her papers successfully.

A Choice of Courage

Despite being eligible to take the exam under the specially-abled category due to her hearing disability, Saumya chose to compete in the general category. This decision speaks volumes about her confidence and determination to succeed on her own terms.

Current Role and Following

Today, Saumya serves as the CEO of Nagpur Zilla Parishad in Maharashtra. She enjoys a significant following on Instagram with 249,000 followers. Her husband, Arpit Chandak, is also an IPS officer and holds the position of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Nagpur city.
