Last-Minute Lifeline: UGC Extends Admission Deadline for Distance and Online Courses

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced an extension for the last date of admissions to open and distance learning (ODL) and online programs. Initially set for September 30, 2023, the new deadline is now October 20, 2023. This extension comes as a relief for many students and institutions affected by various factors such as recent floods and delays in undergraduate results.

Why the Extension?

The decision to extend the deadline was influenced by several factors, including representations from educational institutions. These institutions cited reasons such as recent floods in certain states, delays in the declaration of undergraduate results, and other admission-related issues in conventional educational modes.

Official Requirements

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been instructed to upload the details of student admissions on the UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB) portal by November 5, 2023. Failure to do so may result in actions against the institutions.

Precautions for Students

Before applying, students should take several precautions:

  1. Verify the Status of the Institution: Ensure the HEI you are applying to is recognized.
  2. Check the HEI Website: Look for all necessary details on the official website of the HEI.
  3. Be Aware of Debarred Institutions: Make sure the institution is not on the list of debarred HEIs.
  4. Follow UGC Guidelines: Always adhere to UGC notifications regarding degree specifications and prohibited courses.
